Book Box, pioneered by Ned Sawyer, AIA, http://sawyerarch.com, was brought to life by sculptor Gary Slater, a commission for Scottsdale’s Garden Apartment District years in the making. Today, local businesses have the opportunity to back this commissioned piece of “functional public art” and become one of our presenting, lifetime sponsors for $500.00. Following the launch of Book Box, a permanent metal plaque will replace the thermal printed wrap which features your name or business. Produced in conjunction with Scottsdale Public Library’s very own Books2Go program, Book Box by Ned Sawyer is the newest of 8, and counting, little free libraries to punctuate the entrances to area parks, bike paths, and trailheads. To keep the theme of SGAD’s Mid-Century Modern, “post and beam” style garden apartments, current city landscaping, and new developments, The Goldwater and Museum Square, on either side of the intersection, we turned to Ned Sawyer, AIA, who came back with a design that received unanimous approval. Fabricated by renown local sculptor Gary Slater, the form itself is made from two types of steel; corten steel, pre-treated to rust with a unique patina, and stainless steel, wrapped in thermal printed vinyl. To help offset the cost of Book Box we’re inviting the local business community to take part in making this commission a reality. $500 puts your name or business on our Book Box, forever. For its unveiling, each of our sponsors names or businesses will be prominently displayed on all sides of the container as special thanks. Sponsor names will be printed on a seperate plaque and permanently affixed to the structure at a later date. For more information contact Ben Brosseau at (310) 429-6971 or ben@auxpr.com. By 1962, America’s original boutique hotel, the Motel "Motor Inn" era had arrived, and for Scottsdale, the timing couldn’t have been better. Inside of 4 city blocks just steps from the Hotel Valley Ho sat 18, all different themed properties, each catering to winter travelers from a few days to a few weeks. "Multi-family residential" is a blanket term for buildings that are or can become apartment rentals or condominium homes. The first generation of this type of building is today called the Garden Apartment . The once popular type of multi-family structure, usually 2 stories, looks out to a swimming pool or garden. Built for numerous uses it first met a demand for housing in Post-War Southern California. Many post & beam garden apartments still remain in towns like like West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Venice Beach. And beach communities from Santa Cruz to San Diego, east to the Inland Empire. Garden apartments were built as early as 1937, however between 1954 and 1968, 2 Los Angeles architects would produce the clean-lined, modernist, retreats seen in Old Town Scottsdale's Garden Apartment District. Post & Beam is the type of build, it describes how each one of these buildings is framed. Quick to build, and well suited to the climate of Southern California, an appreciation for indoor/outdoor living began to take hold with young Americans following WWII, thus driving its popularity. In Scottsdale, the first post and beam dwellings went up quickly, within feet of the Hotel Valley Ho, who's owner operator wrangled the Hollywood A-list for vacations and locations. Celebs included Alfred Hitchcock, Natalie Wood, Robert Wagner, Janet Lee and Marilyn Monroe. Motor-Inns were the predecessors of motels and offered the same basic comforts as hotels but without some of the amenities. These were the first boutique retreats in America. Welcome! The third Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Mural paint-a-thon opens on August 12, 2022, at Scottsdale's Saguaro Hotel. #R3Mural Play Video Play Video 01:36 #R3Mural Arrives in Old Town Scottsdale's Historic Garden Apartment District HISTORIC SCOTTSDALE NEIGHBORHOOD TO CURATE ECO-FRIENDLY MURAL Scottsdale, Ariz. (August 17, 2020) -- The Reduce Reuse Recycle mural, #R3Mural, makes a return to the Valley. The painting, made from upcycled paint, billboard vinyl and wood, plays into this year’s theme of adaptive reuse. Located within the town’s proposed historic Garden Apartment District, a few steps south of Hotel Valley Ho. The neighborhood has recently been recognized as a cultural asset, responsible for ushering in and welcoming back Scottsdale’s first seasonal tourists. Created with the help of local kids groups, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and made entirely from repurposed materials, #R3Mural is the 2nd billboard-sized painting of its kind to come from a local collective of contributing artists and educators. Art director Thomas Blee-Carlyle said of the collaborative work, “In my 30 years as a professional artist, this project was one of the most fulfilling, because it combined three of my passions: interactive public art making, historic preservation and the use of repurposed materials.” This year’s theme spotlights “Adaptive Reuse,” adapting to and reusing a building for a purpose other than which it was originally built or designed. Each time #R3Mural is produced with the philosophy of Reduce Reuse Recycle it helps to educate and remind everyone about the exciting possibility for change when we embrace innovation. Garden apartments were the most popular type of multi-family structure built during the halcyon days of the American west. Noted for their post and beam design, vibrant themes, and use of outdoor spaces, over 150 garden apartments, each between 18 and 36 units, were built in Scottsdale between 1954 and 1968. The proposed historic Garden Apartment District is made up of the 18 remaining garden apartments, built as motor inns following the opening of the Hotel Valley Ho motor resort in 1956. Adaptive reuse became the inspiration for this year's mural after the city rezoned an underutilized apartment to a restaurant. “From there we began to map out what type of business each building originally opened as, and what type of business they are today,” says mural founder Ben Brosseau. His team of district ambassadors discovered lots had changed. #R3Mural will hang on the east facing wall of Park Paradise condominiums at 6936 E 4th St, Scottsdale, AZ 85251. A live virtual reveal will air on the Scottsdale Garden Apartment District website, sgadaz.com, Friday, August 14 at 12:00pm MST. A YouTube channel with the edited version of the reveal will run after that, filled with commentary and short talks about adaptive reuse and how it relates to historic preservation. As part of the City of Scottsdale AZ's Development Review Board application and public hearing process for obtaining approval for this year’s mural, our friends at the city have asked me to share with you the following information. The Reduce, Reuse, Recycle mural (#R3Mural) is a 9' x 27' painting, which hundreds of people have helped to create. Launched at our first annual event, RE: V, last August, kids & adults of all ages and backgrounds joined artist Tom Carlyle to set up the core layout of the artwork. After that, Carlyle completed the 50's cubism inspired, 4-panel mural. #R3Mural is made using repurposed vinyl billboards, donated to us by Lamar Advertising. The paint was donated by local start-up Green Sheen. The framing for each of the murals is made from repurposed wood. Once the mural has been shown and properly evaluated, it is donated to charity. The condominiums and apartments within the boundaries of the Scottsdale Garden Apartment District were first built as motor inns. This "cluster" of buildings was crucial to the establishment of Scottsdale as a popular destination. #R3Mural is meant to commemorate that heritage. We believe the east wall of Park Paradise, 6936 E 4th St, Scottsdale, AZ 85251, is the perfect location for it. Visit http://Auxpr.com and take the path that's brought us to this point.
