Book Box, pioneered by Ned Sawyer, AIA, http://sawyerarch.com, was brought to life by sculptor Gary Slater, a commission for Scottsdale’s Garden Apartment District years in the making. Today, local businesses have the opportunity to back this commissioned piece of “functional public art” and become one of our presenting, lifetime sponsors for $500.00. Following the launch of Book Box, a permanent metal plaque will replace the thermal printed wrap which features your name or business. Produced in conjunction with Scottsdale Public Library’s very own Books2Go program, Book Box by Ned Sawyer is the newest of 8, and counting, little free libraries to punctuate the entrances to area parks, bike paths, and trailheads. To keep the theme of SGAD’s Mid-Century Modern, “post and beam” style garden apartments, current city landscaping, and new developments, The Goldwater and Museum Square, on either side of the intersection, we turned to Ned Sawyer, AIA, who came back with a design that received unanimous approval. Fabricated by renown local sculptor Gary Slater, the form itself is made from two types of steel; corten steel, pre-treated to rust with a unique patina, and stainless steel, wrapped in thermal printed vinyl. To help offset the cost of Book Box we’re inviting the local business community to take part in making this commission a reality. $500 puts your name or business on our Book Box, forever. For its unveiling, each of our sponsors names or businesses will be prominently displayed on all sides of the container as special thanks. Sponsor names will be printed on a seperate plaque and permanently affixed to the structure at a later date. For more information contact Ben Brosseau at (310) 429-6971 or ben@auxpr.com. BUILT FIRST AS MOTOR INNS, NOW CONDOS & NIGHTLY, WEEKLY AND MONTHLY RENTALS. DAYO, AMERICANA, JACARANDA, AZURE, SAVOY, WHITE FEATHER, EL DORADO, FOUNTAINEBLEU, CAPRI, SHALIMAR SANDS AND MORE. "Multi-family residential" is a blanket term for buildings that are or can become apartment rentals or condominium homes. The first generation of this type of building is today called the Garden Apartment . The once popular type of multi-family structure, usually 2 stories, looks out to a swimming pool or garden. Built for numerous uses it first met a demand for housing in Post-War Southern California. Many post & beam garden apartments still remain in towns like like West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Venice Beach. And beach communities from Santa Cruz to San Diego, east to the Inland Empire. Garden apartments were built as early as 1937, however between 1954 and 1968, 2 Los Angeles architects would produce the clean-lined, modernist, retreats seen in Old Town Scottsdale's Garden Apartment District. Post & Beam is the type of build, it describes how each one of these buildings is framed. Quick to build, and well suited to the climate of Southern California, an appreciation for indoor/outdoor living began to take hold with young Americans following WWII, thus driving its popularity. In Scottsdale, the first post and beam dwellings went up quickly, within feet of the Hotel Valley Ho, who's owner operator wrangled the Hollywood A-list for vacations and locations. Celebs included Alfred Hitchcock, Natalie Wood, Robert Wagner, Janet Lee and Marilyn Monroe. Motor-Inns were the predecessors of motels and offered the same basic comforts as hotels but without some of the amenities. These were the first boutique retreats in America. Welcome!
