"Multi-family residential" is a blanket term for buildings that are or can become apartment rentals or condominium homes. The first generation of this type of building is today called the Garden Apartment . The once popular type of multi-family structure, usually 2 stories, looks out to a swimming pool or garden. Built for numerous uses it first met a demand for housing in Post-War Southern California. Many post & beam garden apartments still remain in towns like like West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Venice Beach. And beach communities from Santa Cruz to San Diego, east to the Inland Empire. Garden apartments were built as early as 1937, however between 1954 and 1968, 2 Los Angeles architects would produce the clean-lined, modernist, retreats seen in Old Town Scottsdale's Garden Apartment District. Post & Beam is the type of build, it describes how each one of these buildings is framed. Quick to build, and well suited to the climate of Southern California, an appreciation for indoor/outdoor living began to take hold with young Americans following WWII, thus driving its popularity. In Scottsdale, the first post and beam dwellings went up quickly, within feet of the Hotel Valley Ho, who's owner operator wrangled the Hollywood A-list for vacations and locations. Celebs included Alfred Hitchcock, Natalie Wood, Robert Wagner, Janet Lee and Marilyn Monroe. Motor-Inns were the predecessors of motels and offered the same basic comforts as hotels but without some of the amenities. These were the first boutique retreats in America. Welcome!
